Central Station
and the Haarlemmerstraat

Just around the corner from Haarlemmerstraat is Amsterdam Central Station, considered one of the city’s most beautiful buildings.

It was built between 1881 and 1889, designed by P.J.H. Cuypers, A.L. van Gendt (station building) and L.J. Eijmer (station roof). The station sits on three reclaimed islands in the IJ, using sand from the dunes near Velsen, excavated during the digging of the North Sea Canal.

Like many buildings in Amsterdam, it was constructed on wooden piles—8,687 in total. The station opened on October 15, 1889, to huge public interest.

Haarlemmerstraat itself has grown into a well-known shopping street in Amsterdam. Trendy boutiques, vintage shops and unique concept stores alternate, and after shopping you can always stop by Vlaamsch Broodhuys to relax. Enjoy coffee, breakfast, lunch, or take home delicious sourdough bread.
